I’m not a doctor. In fact, I am not affiliated with the medical field at all. 

To be perfectly honest, I am a middle aged overweight woman that is doing her best to make her way in this world and  help people along the way. I am the absolute last person that is an authority on using food as medicine.

I have struggled with my weight my whole life, and have decided at 47 years old, I want to be healthy going into my 50’s. It is less about the weight and more about health. These days there is a big wave of society that talk about “eating clean” and buying organic, these things made logical sense to me. How can processed food be as healthy as whole food? How can eating chemicals and pesticides or GMO’s be healthy? So I have started to pay attention, started trying to clean up my intake and feed my body things that are hopefully enhancing the way my body functions.

In reading about eating healthy and clean, I have come across two predominant ways of thinking that have caused me to stop and really think about food more as medicine. Can what we eat or what we NOT eat really help to fight and or cure diseases such as cancer? I don’t know. In fact, the highly educated top Doctors in the world can’t agree. But I must admit, it is a truly compelling thought. And at the end of the day, if we change our eating it can only help right? There are no negative side effects (aside from a bit of gas…lol). So why not try to eat your medicine?

If you go online and Google nutrition for cancer patients, you will find two predominant thoughts with regard to dietary restrictions. There are thousands of articles, studies and persuasive arguments as to why these work. There are just as many articles stating…there is no concrete proof any of it matters. So we as individuals must do our diligence and decide what road we will travel.

I am happy to share the basics about the two main ways of eating that overwhelmingly remains suggested to assist in eliminating/fighting disease.

KETOGENIC DIET

A ketogenic diet calls for eliminating all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates, and replacing them with healthy fats and high-quality protein.

The premise is that since cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body, then lowering the glucose level in your blood though carb and protein restriction literally starves the cancer cells into oblivion. Additionally, low protein intake tends to minimize the mTOR pathway that accelerates cell proliferation.

This type of diet, in which you restrict all but non-starchy vegetable carbs and replace them with low to moderate amounts of high-quality protein and high amounts of beneficial fat, is what I recommend for everyone, whether you have cancer or not. It's a diet that will help optimize your weight and all chronic degenerative disease. Eating this way will help you convert from carb burning mode to fat burning.

THE ALKALINE DIET

When your immune system fails and is overpowered through acidity, it cannot rid the body of toxins. The cells in the body lose the ability to take in necessary oxygen, possibly killing off that cell. The objective of the alkaline diet is to eat the right types of food that limits over-acidification in the body. Your current diet affects the pH level in your blood with high acidic foods and some doctors argue that this is one of the underlying causes of diseases. The body functions well on a pH level of between 7.35 and 7.45, and inappropriate foods can cause higher or lower levels that extremely affect your health and healing.

Cancer cells only survive in low oxygen conditions and properly maintained pH levels. With a high alkaline diet, the pH provides alkaline body tissues that have the ability to hold much more oxygen in the body than the acidic tissues. Oxygen rich cells prevent the start or progression of cancer. To benefit from the alkaline diet, your body requires a balance of foods with high alkalizing while avoiding acidifying foods.

The alkaline diet is beneficial not only in fighting cancer but also other diseases. Adding some alkaline supplements and water can be beneficial for overall health. Your body can be cancer-free, healthy and feeling more energetic by following the alkaline diet regiment.

As I said, I don't have the answers. But for the people that are battling the brutal disease of cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope some of this information will help you ROCK the TREATMENT!
