President Trump Proclaimed April is National Cancer Control Month

On March 29, 2018, President Trump signed a proclamation marking the month of April Cancer Control Month. In his words, it is a time that “we remember the loved ones we have lost to cancer and recommit our support for the courageous individuals who are fighting this terrible disease. We also pause to thank the devoted healthcare professionals, scientists, and researchers who work tirelessly to discover a cure for cancer and whose combined efforts have contributed to an encouraging decline in the overall rate of deaths from cancer over the past two decades.”

The proclamation calls our citizens to action in the following ways:

  • It encourages individuals to speak with their doctors and health care providers about the preventative measure they can take to save lives.
  • It asks that individuals, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofits, and other groups to participate in activities to increase the awareness of what people can do to control cancer and the risks associated with getting the disease.
  • The proclamation also asks governors of all states and territories to join the President in recognizing April as National Cancer Control Month.

Cancer Is Causes Hundreds of Thousands of Deaths in America

More than 15 million Americans have beat cancer thanks to medical breakthroughs, new treatments, and education. Despite the high number of survival stories, however, cancer in 2018 took the lives of nearly 600,000 adults and 2,000 children. Cancer still, however, remains the second leading cause of death in America.

How Can You Help Control Cancer?

Controlling cancer, according to president trump’s proclamation, means taking preventative measures and making changes to decrease the risk of developing the disease.
Eating a healthy diet, using sunscreen, controlling your weight, quitting smoking, and getting regular exercise can all decrease the risk of getting cancer.

Taking other measures like getting regular screenings, self-evaluating, and understanding your existing risks can help with early detection of cancer. By catching the disease early, you can often increase your chance of survival and avoid some of the most severe and lengthy treatments and side-effects.

Cancer may never disappear entirely, but some medical organizations believe that the majority of cancers are preventable. April is the month to learn more about controlling cancer in your life, your family, and the country.
