The Prevent Cancer Foundation Seeks to Eradicate the High Rate of Cancer and Cancer-Related Deaths

In 1985, Carolyn Aldige created the Prevent Cancer Foundation. After watching her father-in-law suffer through his cancer diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately death, she embarked on the mission stated on the organization’s website. That mission is to “spare others from the pain and suffering caused by cancer.” Aldige believed that prevention, not only treatment and early detection, could dramatically decrease the rate of cancer diagnoses and death.

According to the website for the organization www.preventcancer.org, nearly 1.74 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in 2020. More than 600 thousand will die. The organization tells us that, according to research, “up to 50% of cancer cases and about 50% of cancer deaths are preventable with the knowledge we have today.” April happens to be National Cancer Control Month.

What better time to think about ways in which you can improve your health and reduce your cancer risks?

Preventing Cancer in Seven Easy Steps

There was a time when researchers focused solely on cancer treatments. Today, we know that there are lifestyle changes people can make to improve their overall health and reduce their chances of getting cancer.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation suggests taking these seven steps to reduce your risk of developing cancer:

  • Understand your family medical history and get regular cancer screenings
  • Don’t use tobacco
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Protect your skin from the sun
  • Get immunized
  • Maintain healthy body weight and be physically active
  • Practice safer sex and avoid risky behavior

These Seven Steps Can Reduce the Risk of Many Types of Cancer

You would be amazed at how many cancers are affected by the foods we eat and the activities in which we engage. By taking these suggested steps, you might be able to reduce your risk of some of the following cancers:
