I have always been the type of person that will do anything I can to help another. This is the reason I started www.RockTheTreatment.com. Over the course of time, I have discovered it not only allows me the opportunity to provide cancer gift baskets that help ease the horrific side effects of cancer treatment. But there countless other ways my business touches and affects other people’s lives in a positive way.
For example, Rock the Treatment has been proud to provide some of the proceeds from the sale of our baskets to an amazing organization called Hair We Share. Hair We Share is a local not-for-profit organization whose mission it is to build self-esteem for individuals affected by medical hair loss. They rely solely on donations for hair (pony tails) and monetary contributions.
Hair loss is a life changing experience. The donations they receive provide quality hair solutions at no cost to qualified individuals.
After forging close bond with Suzanne Chimera (one of the founders), I was asked to join their board of directors. As this endeavor was new to me, I researched and learned everything I need to know about radiation and chemotherapy gift baskets. So I set about learning what was needed and how I can help. In speaking with her, I was shocked to learn just how much hair and money is needed to make one wig. It takes a minimum of SIX pony tails to construct a wig! Even more shocking, is to take those pony tails and make them into a wig it costs anywhere from $800 to $1000 per wig!!
Honestly, I don’t know why, but it never occurred to me that there was money needed to make a wig. It was as if I imagined some magical elves came in and poof turned the pony tails into wigs (like the pumpkins in Cinderella). In talking to my friends, I was not alone. Everyone knows to donate 8”of hair. But not one person ever thought to make a monetary donation!
This is quite a problem. Because, of course, nothing could be further from the truth. It takes a lot of planning, hard work and money to construct a wig. Not to mention, once it is complete the wig must be cut, styled and sometimes colored or permed so that the end product is perfect for the recipient. Receiving a wig like this is LIFE CHANGING.
Hair We Share, does this all for free and does not charge the recipient one penny! Another thing I learned while doing my homework is that “virgin” (unprocessed) hair is REALLY VALUEABLE. If I were to buy a wig of this quality it would cost upwards of $2300.00. Even more shocking is because current hair trends are all about extensions; these pony tails are really valuable! There is a very lucrative and large market that will pay A LOT of money for these pony tails. In fact, there is at least one (very large and well known) non-for-profit that sells the pony tails that are donated. They then and use the funds to make wigs of a lesser quality. While, I understand that this doing this allows them to make more wigs and help a greater amount of people. And, I am all for helping the most people we can. That being said, if it were me (heaven forbid), I would want the best most natural looking wig I could possibly get. Unfortunately, I would likely not be able to afford one.
I am writing this article today to get the word out. Because currently, Hair We Share has enough pony tails to make 60 wigs! So there are 60 people going through horrific time medically and what’s worse, they are doing it feeling embarrassed, ashamed and terrible because they have experienced loss of hair. The only thing preventing these very deserving people from getting their wigs is money!
Please join me in spreading the word that just as important as pony tails is COLD HARD CASH! Please help Hair We Share get these wigs complete and to their new owners!
