February 4 is World Cancer Day
February is the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Month. February also includes World Cancer Day, which takes place annually on February 4. This internationally recognized day is organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
What Does the UICC Do?
According to its website, the UICC’s members “unite and support the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to promote greater equity, and to ensure that cancer control continues to be a priority in the world health and development agenda.”
One self-declared goal of the UICC is to “save millions of preventable deaths each year through education, raising awareness, and by pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.”
Members of the UICC include approximately 1100 world organizations in more than 150 countries. You can learn more about the UICC at https://www.uicc.org/who-we-are/about-us.
What is World Cancer Day?
World Cancer Day is February 4. It is a single day designated to unite the world in the fight against cancer “under one banner.” The theme of World Cancer Day this year is “‘I Am and I Will.’. It is an empowering call to action urging for personal commitment and represents the power of individual action taken now to impact the future.”
Events will occur across the globe in different countries, cities, and communities. Some scheduled events include international summits about cancer treatment developments, fundraising walks, and activities honoring survivors and caregivers.
What Can You do on World Cancer Day?
The UICC provides resources and materials to help individuals involve themselves, friends, and families in activities designed to promote cancer awareness and more.
- Talk to someone about the risks of getting cancer and the importance of a healthy lifestyle to reduce those risks
- Make a monetary donation to a cancer research institute or cancer care center
- Write to your government representative about a cancer-related issue that matters to you
- Visit a friend with cancer, take her to treatment, or cook him a healthy meal
