Scientists, Doctors, and Advocates Continue to Push For Cancer Progress

According to WebMD, there are approximately 100 types of cancer. It has been around for thousands of years. The last century, however, has been the only time during which science has begun to understand what cancer is and how it progresses.

Researchers and doctors have made astonishing discoveries that have led to advances in the way they diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer. People who have cancer are living longer and longer. Yet, there remain types of cancer that “remain frustratingly difficult to treat.”

Despite the remarkable progress, it is nearly impossible to find someone who does not have a close friend or relative that had cancer or is currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation for cancer. Thankfully, organizations like the American Cancer Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) continue to research, raise money, advocate for patients and policy, as well as educate people about cancer.

Keeping Cancer in The Forefront is Essential to Progress is a website that provides “doctor-approved patient information from ASCO.” On their calendar for March includes:

  • Colorectal cancer awareness month
  • Kidney Cancer Awareness Month
  • Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month
  • March 3, 2020- Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Day
  • March 4, 2020 – International HPV Awareness Day
  • March 6, 2020 – World Lymphedema Day
  • March 8, 2020 – International Women’s Day
  • March 18, 2020 – Kick Butts Day
  • March 21, 2020-Anal Cancer Awareness Day

There are events taking place across the nation to raise funds, provide education, and call attention to these types of cancer. You can do something in March as simple as wear a colored ribbon or shirt to show your support for someone you love who has cancer. For example, the color for colorectal cancer is dark blue, kidney cancer is orange, and multiple myeloma is burgundy.
