Events to Support Cancer Patients

events to support cancer patients

One of the best ways to support cancer patients is to gather the community and celebrate them. Events are a popular way to show support, both in your local community and larger organizations. Here are some examples of events to support cancer patients.

Pink Out Events

Pink Out events are an easy and popular way for a community to show support for cancer patients, no matter the kind of cancer. Pink Out events don’t take extensive planning and can be done with any group of people. Schools and places of work have asked their students and employees to wear pink for a day. Groups in the community can create their own events, like firefighters driving around town with pink trucks and uniforms. The possibilities are endless, no matter how big or small your group is! It’s a beautiful, simple way to show cancer patients in your community that they are not alone.

Cancer Center Events

There are around 1,500 cancer centers throughout the United States, and they hold a variety of events. They can be very broad or specific, including cancer patients as well as survivors. The University of Colorado’s Cancer Center held an event to celebrate 5-year lung cancer survivors in their community. Survivors, families, clinicians, and researchers gathered together to celebrate the survivors and the advancements in cancer research. Check out your local cancer centers to see events you can attend!

Fundraising Events for Cancer

Fundraising events for cancer exist throughout the country, both locally and nationally organized. There are organizations for these events like the well-known Relay for Life. There are walks, runs, and even bike races to attend! There are also other fundraising events besides these. THON is a student-run organization at Penn State. It is an over 40 hour dance marathon where participants don’t sit or lay down. It’s an incredibly popular event in the community, with high school and middle schools doing their own “mini thons” for a night of dancing for cancer fundraising. Many organizations will also help you hold these events if there happen to not be any near you.

Community Organizations

There are local organizations throughout the country who put on community events to support survivors and current cancer patients. Go Gold East Texas holds an annual event for the community to gather in support of local children with cancer. Their recognizable moment is when the children walk down the gold carpet laid out in their honor. Each child also gets a shirt with the word “Hero” across it. It’s an exciting event for everyone and shows the children that they are not alone. Find local organizations and events near you to show support!

Supporting Cancer Patients in the Workplace

You can also support your employees who are patients or survivors of cancer. Delta Airlines have an annual flight on “Breast Cancer One.” All employees who had or currently have breast cancer are flown on a pink-decorated plane, and everyone on board wears pink. While this may be an impressive example of showing support, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate. A pink out day, a donation party, and more are available at your disposal. The only limiting factor is your imagination!

You can find an organization or event near you or create your own! Supporting cancer patients and survivors in an important part of fighting loneliness.
