Cancer Gift Giving Made Easy by Rock the Treatment

Is There an Art to Gift-Giving?

Gift-giving is something we do all year long. We give gifts on holidays and birthdays. Perhaps we give a gift at the end of the school year to a teacher or a gift to thank someone for doing us a favor. We might even send a gift to cheer someone up or let them know we are thinking of them.

How often do you stop and really think about what it means to give a gift or about the process of gift-giving? Probably not often enough. But, there is plenty of depth to the art of giving a gift. However, much of it gets tucked away in our subconscious, perhaps because of how often we do it.

What is the Art of Gift Giving?

The art of gift-giving involves thought. Believe it or not, it actually is the thought that counts. Whether we realize it or not, when we give a gift, it is because we hope to elicit a positive emotional response from the recipient or express something to the recipient. We can do this in various ways that can differ depending on the people or the motivation. These are just some of the thoughts that might go into selecting and giving a single gift:

  • Should the gift be something the recipient would not pick out for themselves?
  • Should it be something you know the recipient wants but is too extravagant to buy for herself?
  • Will the gift make the recipient feel special?
  • Should you make the gift yourself?
  • Will the gift evoke a fond or funny memory?
  • Will the recipient know I put thought into this gift?
  • Will the recipient understand the meaning or intention of the gift?
  • Is the gift an appropriate one given your relationship with the recipient?
  • Will the gift please or satisfy the recipient in some way?
  • What message are you trying to convey with this gift?

Typically, if you are planning to give someone a gift, you should know them well enough to put some thought into it. If you know the recipient, you should have some idea of what they like or dislike and their needs and preferences. For example, you might not buy a bouquet of fresh flowers for a friend with terrible allergies. But you might buy a pint of ice cream for your best friend after a bad breakup, even if they are on a diet.

If you don’t know the recipient very well, it can be more challenging but not impossible to find an appropriately thoughtful gift. You can make an effort to find out information about the person to help you with the process. If a gift is for a teacher, for example, you might ask your child if they drink coffee or tea in the classroom or talk about things or places they like to eat.
Asking a few questions can yield lots of information that can help you find a suitable gift.
