Covid-19 Presents Cancer Caregivers With New Challenges

Caring for someone with cancer is difficult. Caring for someone with cancer during a pandemic like Covid-19 creates an entirely new set of issues. Social distancing, wearing masks and quarantining can make caring for a loved one extraordinarily hard.

The risk of developing Covid-19 to people who are undergoing treatment for cancer is high. Cancer patients have weakened immune systems and are extremely susceptible to all illnesses. Concern over their health is always at the forefront, but Covid-19 makes things especially frightening.

Caregivers Must Find New Ways to Help Loved Ones With Cancer

Whether you live with the person for whom you are caring or are you are a friend or relative who is nearby, a caregiver’s biggest challenge during Covid-19 might be this:

being unable to be present in-person when your loved one needs you most.

Most hospitals and cancer treatment centers will no longer allow patients to bring their cancer buddies to support and assist them. You might not be able to safely sit in a car with your friend, visit at home, or help with chores. Covid-19 spreads quickly and easily. The risk of infecting the person you have been caring for might be too high.

Cancer Caregivers During Covid-19 Must Consider Everyone’s Health

The health and well-being of your friend or loved one is probably the most important thing to you during this pandemic. But your health matters too. The first thing you should do is ensure you remain healthy and strong. Reducing your risk of getting sick means not taking unnecessary risks for the sake of others. Follow the guidelines for staying safe: washing your hands, wearing a mask, and social distancing.

If you live in the same house with the person you have been caring for, staying healthy is even more important. Consider having delivery services get things like groceries, so you don’t have to have unnecessary contact with the public. Clean frequently, disinfect, and perhaps try to avoid having anyone get too close. This includes anyone in your home who has contact with the public.

Although in-person help may be difficult to provide, caregivers can do plenty of things during the pandemic to help their friend or family member with cancer. Doing online shopping, paying online bills, making insurance-related phone calls, arranging deliveries, and updating others are all important tasks that you can handle for someone from a distance.

Caregivers and Cancer Patients May Feel Isolated and Lonely During Covid-19

We know how isolated Covid-19 can make you feel. Shutdowns, working from home, social distancing, and self-quarantining have caused unprecedented times. When you have been caring for someone with cancer, the separation can be hard on both of you. You might feel a loss of control that comes with being unable to care for him or her directly. Chances are you will also miss him or her and the opportunities you have had to spend time together.

Facetime, Zoom, MS Teams, Google Hang, are also excellent vehicles for staying in touch. It can be a relief to caregivers and patients to see each other’s faces regularly. Frequent phone calls, texts, and video calls can ease some of the loneliness and stress of the pandemic.

Sending gifts that can help your friend or family member cope with chemo or radiation on their own can also be very helpful. Anything he or she might be able to take to the hospital to ease stress or anxiety, act as a distraction, or help with comfort would surely be welcome.
